Photoshop, 4 hours, heavy Neondragon referencing (finger skin design, hair art style, line art style, some digital coloring techniques)

Patience + reference = art.

All too often I try and speed through a piece and ruin it. I'm glad I have moments like this one to remind myself I really do know how to draw something if I want to.

Colors work very well together. The beak doesn't work as well as it might, but its alright.

Hmm, what kind of change do you think would fit better?

The "nose" part of the beak is too pronounced. That wouldn't be a problem if this were an canine-type mouth, but its a beak.

The only types of birds that have beaks curved in that manner are nut-eaters like parrots. the actual difference between this shape and the more intimidating hawk-beak is quite small, but nonetheless important.

Beaks require real attention to detail, which is why I generally don't bother with them.

ok... now I must say good things. The long things coming off of the nose are nice, as are the the level of detail and design you put into the wings.

It really looks pretty cool.

The size of the nose does remind me of a macaw or some kind of nut cracker, you're right. I guess that makes the hook a bit unexpected. Hmm. Something I've always tried to do in my art is make fantasy look like it could possibly come from reality, muscles and bone interlock properly- that kind of thing. Do you think a flat tip instead of a hook would have looked more natural?

The whisker things are eastern-dragon traditional, I like playing with their design on other species XD

personally, yes, I think that a hawk-like beak would look better. dragons, after all do not eat nuts in any great quantity. (at least, as far as I know...)
